Whether you’re vegetarian or not, this black bean burger recipe will hit every spot. Made with black beans, oats, onion, and carrots, and spiced up with cumin, coriander, and cayenne, this burger is so good you’ll wonder whether you ever want to go back to the carnivore version. Cook the patties on a pan covered in cooking spray, or use a slightly more generous pour of cooking oil for a crispier finish.
- 2 cans of black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of cumin
- 1 teaspoon of chili powder
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1/2 cup of bread crumbs
- 1 egg
- Burger buns
- Toppings of your choice (lettuce, tomato, avocado, etc.)
1. In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans using a fork or potato masher until they are mostly pureed.
2. In a small pan, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté the diced onion and minced garlic until they are soft and fragrant.
3. Add the sautéed onions and garlic to the mashed black beans and mix well.
4. Add in the cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper to the black bean mixture and stir until all the ingredients are well combined.
5. Next, add in the bread crumbs and egg to the mixture and mix until it forms a thick and sticky dough.
6. Divide the dough into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
7. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat and add a little bit of olive oil.
8. Cook the black bean burgers for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
9. While the burgers are cooking, prepare your burger buns and toppings.
